By worshiping it on Sunday, apart from deteriorating economic condition, one has to face physical troubles as well. There is a legend behind not worshiping Peepal tree on Sunday. According to this, both mother Lakshmi and her sister Alakshmi came out from the churning of the ocean. Both the sisters prayed to Lord Vishnu and asked for a place to stay for themselves.

According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu gave both Goddess Lakshmi and her sister Daridra a place to reside in the Peepal tree. In this way both the sisters started living in the Peepal tree. Once when Lord Vishnu proposed marriage to Mata Lakshmi, he first requested the marriage of his sister Daridra. Alakshmi wished that she should be married to someone who does not worship.

According to Daridra’s wish, Lord Vishnu got her married to such a sage. After marriage, Lord Vishnu gave Daridra and her husband Rishi a place to reside in his abode Peepal on Sundays. Since then, it is believed that poverty i.e. Alakshmi resides on the Peepal tree on Sundays. By worshiping Peepal on Sunday, Alakshmi becomes happy and poverty comes in the house. That’s why Peepal tree should not be worshiped on Sunday.
